What can and can’t I do?

A Learner's Permit is a legal document that allows you drive. However the permit indicates its holder has not yet satisfied the requirements to obtain a provisional licence or an unrestricted car licence and must comply with certain conditions while learning to drive.

  • Must carry their Learner's Permit at all times when driving.
  • The L-plates must be clearly displayed at the front and rear of the vehicle.
  • Must be accompanied by a qualified supervising driver (a person who has held a full licence for a minimum of 2 years without disqualification).
  • Must not drive with any drug or alcohol concentration in their blood.
  • Must not exceed a speed of 100 km/h.
  • Must not exceed the speed limit by more than 10 km/h
  • May not use or operate a hands free phone kit or Bluetooth while the car is on.
